El Elyon

I’m in a weekly bible study at my church and we are studying the names of God this year.  It’s been a really good study.  I’ve really enjoyed it.  I have found that understanding the Hebrew names of God and when they are used in the bible have hightened my reading.  It’s truly wonderful!

This past week we studied El Elyon or The Most High God.  This name of God is used with Abram, Daniel, Joseph and Jesus.  One of the scriptures we read this week came from Acts.  Luke wrote:

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands.  And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.  From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.  God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.  For in him we live and move and have our being.  As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.'”  Acts 17: 24-28

I really like this passage.  It provides peace and calm for me.  There is nothing in the world that happens that is out of God’s control.  There is nothing to fear or be anxious about.  I also like the part where Luke says, “he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.”  I’m an adoptive mom…God chose to have my children born in a different country.  But they are surely MY children!  He intended them to be mine!  Awesome!

Our leader made 4 good points that I will end with concerning our El Elyon:

1. God is sovereign over our enemies.  He protects us from them in times of trouble.  He is our sheild.

2. God is sovereign over all rulers, governments, and world powers.  He put them in power and can take them out of power.  (See Daniel  Chapter 4.)

3.  God is sovereign over the circumstances in our lives.  There is nothing He does not know and nothing He cannot do!

4.  God is sovereign over evil and what satan and his demons seek to do in our lives.  They know He is all powerful and must beg his permission do to anything to God’s children.  (See Mark 5:1-8 )
